Escallonia in serious trouble

Sharon Carr asked 15 years ago

I have a fantastic escallonia hedge around my garden for the last eight years. This year however it has deteriorated. You can practically see through it in patches, where it should be solid green throughout the year. Please can you give me any idea what to treat it with as it seems to be spreading. I attach a photo. I really look forward to your reply.

This is a leaf spot disease of escallonia which has appeared in many parts of the country, causing leaf drop. Spraying for a disease like this is not really practical and all you can do is leave it be and see if the onset was weather-related.

Sometimes diseases have a very favourable spell of weather and afterwards, they do not present the same problem again, but often the problem becomes chronic, and in this case, the shrub may have to be removed.
