escallonia problem

last June my 10 year old Escallonia apple blossom hedge leaves developed black spots and now many are gone. new leaves continue to develop them and fall off. What can I do? billy

There is a leaf spot disease of escallonia which has appeared in many parts of the country, causing leaf drop. Spraying for a disease like this is not really practical and all you can do is leave it be and see if the onset was weather-related.

Sometimes diseases have a very favourable spell of weather and afterwards, they do not present the same problem again, but often the problem becomes chronic, and in this case, the shrub may have to be removed.
