Fallen tree

Brian Geoghegan asked 14 years ago

An evergreen tree fell out our back last week. I cut two four foot sections from the trunk and inserted them upright into the earth in our garden at about eighteen inches deep. They look very well with some sculptures on top.How can I protect them from rotting and the bark from falling off?Is there a product available, (preferably clear) that will preserve them?

The buried portion will tend to rot because it is wet. The bark will fall off no matter what you do and the top part with rot eventually too. Applying surface treatments, such as for fence or sheds, might extend its life by a few years, but not much more.

These sort of features are best treated as fairly temporary, not permanent.
