Would it be advisable to grow strawberries in containers to allow the runners to trail. I was recently told to use a barrel or something similiar so that the insects and slugs don’t affect the crop when the runners are on the ground. Please advise Clare

Strawberries are best grown in the open soil in a sunny spot. They can be grown in barrels or pots but there are no great advantages and the disadvantage of restricted growth and having to water.

Runners are best taken off when they appear, unless you want to raise new plants.
