Hi Gerry, I am preparing a veg. garden for the first time. How do I get rid of the grass and roots, presumably I cannot use any weed deterrant, is it possible to cover the grass area a few weeks before digging in order to let the grass roots die off a bit? Thanks , Maguto

Covering grass with black polythene or old carpet is effective in clearing existing grass and weeds but it can take several months.

If you want to grow vegetables this year, you can either dig the area, carefully turning down the grassy part of the sods, or apply Roundup as a once-off treatment before cultivation, which can take place within a few days of spraying. But be sure that all areas are sprayed and none missed.
