I’d appreciate any advice on harvesting my onions and potatoes. Spuds are Duke of York, and they have profuse foliage but few blossoms. (I have just read they are prone to blight! Ick!)Onions are poking their “shoulders” up above the surface, and looking very healthy – they are Red Baron and Sturon. The books say to wait til the onion foliage dies down, but a few have already produced seed heads, which I have snapped off.

‘Duke of York’ is an early variety and can be lifted as soon as the tubers ar ebig enough. SO investigate and lift a few and boil them, and you will tell right away.

Some onions go to seed and should be used as they will not store. The ones for storing should have their tops fall over and yellow between mid-August and mid-September.

Then loosen them in the soil with a fork and leave them a few days, then pull and shake off soil and after another few days put on wire mesh or some such and if possible finish with a couple of weeks in the greenhouse to ripen fully.
