I have a gorgeous pink lady apple tree growing at my allotment. Last night I noticed a hole in the trunk close to the bottom of the tree, about 10cm in diameter and 1cm deep. I also spotted a joint on an upper branch withy crusty, dried and flaky chunk bark. I am worried!!! What should I do?

This might be apple canker which is a diease of wet conditions and high rainfall. Remove grass or mulch close to the stem and feed the tree in spring with some potash fertiliser to harden its tissue.
