Identify beetle

stacey herlihy asked 16 years ago

While weeding raspberries this morning I found 2 beetles. Thye were approx 2.5 cm long , abrownish shell and on the undersurface they had a very distinctive black and white pattern towards their tail. Just wondering if they are dangerous! Many Thanks.

These sound like chafer beetles, quite large. They emerge in summer from under ground where they feed as large grubs. They may have been under the raspberries or other garden plants.

If there are many of them, they can cause damage to roots of fruit trees etc but mainly a curiosity … they can fly too and often bump into windows at night.
