I have two Ilex Crenata Spiral one died back last year but with a lot of TLC it is improving the second one I noticed last week that the leaves were dying off it has some new foliage at present but the base is very bare. Would appreciate any advise on the problem.

Ilex crenata is a very pretty small-leaved holly, but can be tricky to grow and can react badly to unsuitable conditions, either in pots or in the ground.

It likes fertile open soil, with some organic material, that drains well. It likes to have just nicely moist, never too wet or too dry. Also it likes a fairly warm place with good light but not too much direct sunshine.
