June beetle problems

Paula Sheridan asked 14 years ago

We are preparing a small area of garden to put raised beds in to grow some vegetables for the first time and have found numerous June Beetles in various stages of development. Should we continue to prepare the ground or is it a waste of time. Is there any control we can apply safely given we want to grow veg? We are very very new to all this veg growing!

These are unlikely to be much, or any, trouble. You have probably disrupted most of those there or killed them and they generally need more feeding, as on grass roots or shrubs and may well starve before your vegetables get going, and they generally so not attack vegetable plants in any case.

There is an eelworm control product which Mr Middleton in Dublin sells.
