I have a large lawn. 1/2 acre or so. Is solid or liquid fertiliser more economical.

On a half-acre, use a small fertiliser distributor and spread solid lawn feed. It is cheaper to use agricultural fetiliser such as CAN or urea but be very careful not to use too much or you get a big burst of growth.
Use only with rain on the way.
