Magnolias, even under pressure, should be showing leaves by the end of April. If the plants were healthy at planting, it is very soon for them to die off, this usually takes months.

A possibility is that snails have climbed the plants and eaten the leaves, which they love. Check closely to see if there are any signs of nipped off leaves and control the snails if so.
