This sound slike violet root rot, which is caused by a fungus with blackish threads of mycelium to which soil often sticks. It causes rotting, often in association with bacterial soft rot, which smell bad.

It can badly affect carrots in store.

The fungal material is persistent in soil and can be supported by wild carrot family plants. All you can do it to try a new part of the garden. ‘Chantenay’ types are credited with some resistance.
