move a tree

Lyn Carolan asked 14 years ago

I have a sorbus Joseph Rock at the end of my garden that needs to be moved to accomodate a garden building. The tree itself is 9 years old and about 15 feet tall.Is it possible to move it? It is a lovely tree and I’d like to save it, if possible.

In theory, it is possible. You need to do it in two stages. Dig a trench about 60cm from the trunk in a semi-circle and prune all roots to a depth of 40cm. Then back fill. Next winter, dig the other semi-circle and move it, or if you can, wait until the third winter.

The root ball will be big and takes quite a bit of digging to get out and to move to a new place. A bit of bother but it is possible.
