A friend arrived yesterday with about 10 black bags full of mature shrubs which includes heather, phormiums and a Lilac Tree. grasses etc. Her Aunt wanted them all gone as she is slabbing her garden and she could not bear for them to be destroyed. i have them in water in the bags and will be planting them this afternoon with the help of a mini digger. I know this is not the season for moving shrubs. Am I wasting my time, will they die?

Not the ideal time for planting and they have probably been badly lifted. The chances are not great but some will make it, such as phormium. Plant them and keep them watered, nicely moist. Not every day but every few days.
