mulching hedges

paula forte asked 16 years ago

I have 3 young hedges, yew, hornbeam and privet and was wondering if grass clippings would be a good mulch for them.

A mulch is a good thing for young hedges, helping to retain moisture and providing some nutrients, but lawn mowings tend to carry a lot of grass seeds and as the mulch breaks down you get grass growing strongly thanks to the mulch.

Use a mulch of some weed-free material, such as rotted leaf-mould or bark
