Newly sowed lawn

Paddy Murphy asked 14 years ago

I have just sowed a new lawn and am wondering when I should first apply fertilizer and what type I should apply?

When a lawn is to be sown, it should get an application of general fertilsier, such as 10-10-20, or 18-6-12, at 100g per square metre a week or two beforehand. This is called a base dressing, but having missed doing so before sowing, you could apply this in spring over two years, but only if rain is due.

After that, a lawn needs only some high-nitrogen fertiliser or lawn feed in April and possibly in June and August.

Or you can grow a lawn as a wildflower lawn with no feeding but mulch mowing to return the nutrients.
