These are summer bedding plants and need to be transplanted, or ‘pricked out’ as it is called, into new trays, cell trays or small pots of the same compost.

This is done when the seed leaves have expanded, but ideally before true leaves have appeared between the two seed leaves, usually a week or two after germination, depending on the kind of plant.

This is done by carefully loosening the compost under the seeldings and lifting each seedling out by one of the seed leaves. A little hole is made in the new tray and the seedlings roots carefully put into the hole and compost moved to gently fill the hole. Space the seedlings about 5 to 8cm apart.

A light watering with a fine mist is given to settle te seedling and no watering is done for a few days.
