Orange rust on salix

Gerry Cleary asked 16 years ago

Hi Gerry, I have three salix on my patio along with other container plants such as Acers and Phormiums. There is orange rust on one of the salix trees, do I need to treat this or dispose of it?

The orange rust is the spore masses of willow rust. These often blacken as other rust spores are produced. It is very common and somewhat unsightly.

Spraying is neither successful or desireable. If you can put up with the defoliation, leave them be but they are likely to get this each year. Otherwise replace them.
