I have bought four medium size patio pots and am wondering what plants are best suitable. The patio is an open area.

You can plant either temporary plants such as bedding plants or some permanent things such as phormium, Japanese maple, box or lavender.
Best to go and browse some garden centres, see what you like and imagine it in the positons you have at home.
