Plants for small shaded bed?

ANGRYFACE asked 13 years ago

I have an area of approx 1m X 4m in my garden that i want to place a flower bed. The area of that section of garden does suffer from bad drainage, the grass is very patchy and muddy to walk on when wet weather and the area is fully shaded. For my flower bed i’d like to be sure of what compost to use and what shrubs, plants, flowers grow well in these conditions and look very well. Low maintenance is also good, Im a beginner

It is a relatively small area and mostly perennial flowers would be suitable, including hostas, astilbes, asarum, bergenia, London pride, primula, libertia, dianella, and evergreen shrubs aucuba and viburnum planted on low mounds out of the worst of the wetness.

No compost is needed if the soil is okay.
