Hi,I live on an average dublin estate with a mature tree beside the drive, what can i out underneath it to liven it up, there’s very little spil because the tree’s roots are quite exposed.I’ve tried Sedum and some heathers and they haven’t worked out. Thx

It is always difficult to get small plants to grow at dry base of a tree. To my eye, trees beside roads are best with just grass around them. Small plants look fussy.

Sow somw grass seed in September and it should establish. If you must use a plant, try libertia … it is shade-tolerant and copes with dry soil, or dianella. Both ot these form a tuft of spiky grassy leaves.
