potato oddity

Last year some of my potato plants developed (what i can only describe as unripe tomatos green in colour) after flowering can you tell me what they were and was i right to throw them out.

These are ‘potato apples’ and look very like small tomatoes, they being in the same family, but these are very poisonous if eaten.

Incidentally, if they ripen to red, they look ven more like tomatoes. The seeds can be taken out to raise new potato plants.
