Our three-year-old escallonia hedge is very bare at the bottom (admittedly, due to neglect and letting grass grow too high underneath it over the last few years). Is there any way of rejuvenating it? Hedge is around 4-5 ft high and very healthy on top.

It will tend to fill out at ground level if the grass is controlled becaus light falling on the stems will trigger new buds.

You could also take cuttings in autumn and insert, either rooted or unrooted, along the base to fill it out.
