problem with escallonia

blackberry asked 16 years ago

Our 5 year old escallonia hedging has become bare and woody from the bottom to 3/4 of the way up. It is about 5′ high, and until the end of September was thick and and healthy. The leaves have black spots, turn yellow and fall off. This problem is running right through a long border hedging. Is there anything that we can do to save and revise it?

This is leaf spot disease and it can be quite damaging. It is variable and can affect plants in some gardens and not in others and it some years, it is worse.

There is no good control and the hedge recovers but can suffer a recurrence. If it becomes too unsightly, it might need to be replaced.
