We are currently infested with black flies with quite thin bodies and long dangly body parts. How do we get rid of them? They’re pretty horrible.

Hard to say exactly what these are but they are certainly harmless both to plants and people. There are lots of species of flies that emerge for a short time, mate and disappear again, so they will soon depart. Sometimes they appear and sometimes not.
And impossible to get rid of in any case. Even if you were to kill those present, others can always fly in.
