Problem with trees

Liz Flanagan asked 14 years ago

We have horse chestnut trees growing less than 5 metres from our house. Is this safe? If not,do we need to dig the roots out or just cut them down?

Five metres is too close to a house for such a large tree. It will be alright for about fifteen years and then get too big. As a mature tree, horse chestnut has a tendency to drop branches.

They can be cut down and replaced with smaller species, treating the stumps with undiluted Roundup when felled to prevent re-sprouting.
