pruning conifers

fons jaspers asked 15 years ago

I’m not sure about the questions/answers regarding conifer pruning. Spring is best time, September 2nd best? I pruned mine (Cupressus ariz. Fastig. Aurea) earlier this year, within the green tips, but it develops more and more brown at the surface.

In general, it is best if conifers are not pruned at all, except to correct shape and branching. This can be done any time.

If conifers are grown as hedging, they are best clipped in September as they will not grow out and stay neat for the longest period until May/June.

In an exposed garden, such clipping should take place in spring. Perhaps your plant is a bit exposed.
