pruning magnolia

Gerry, i have the above for the last 10 years or so as a centre piece in my front garden, it is now spreading out over my lawn. is it possible to prune it? Thanks in antipication

There is no problem pruning magnolia. The only thing to bear in mind it to remove entire branches back to where they arise on a main branch or on the trunk, so as not to leave an ugly snag.

 If it has become too broad, you probably will be able to take away the bottom branches back to the main stem. Branches higher up can be shortened back to bigger branches.

Stand back and look at the tree when the leaves are off and it will be quite easy to see which ones should be removed … tracing each back to the source.
