Pruning wisteria

Paul Colligan asked 10 years ago

Wisteria is well established, growing along a fence, c 30 m long, straggly & bits are somewhat bare at this time of year. Probably need someone to prune it properly, even if I lose a year.

Wisteria can be pruned lightly, to keep it to size, in late July and August, cutting back all long whippy shoots to pencil length. If a more severe reduction in size is needed, cut back the surplus older shoots immediately after flowering in spring and later reduce the resultant whippy growth as suggested.
