I have a patio at the top and bottom of my lawn. The one nearest the house is about 3 inches higher than the one at the bottom. The lawn has a brick border. the border starts to rise higher that the lawn roughly 3 metres from the top patio. I want to raise the lawn to meet the higher patio following the profile of the border bricks. Should I till and reseed the area in question or can I topsoil and let the grass come through? Any help is appreciated.

Spray the exisitng lawn with Roudup to kill it and mow tightly one week later. Allow to break down for a couple of weeks and simply top up. Firm well by trampling, rolling is not as good, and strike the new level by raking and firming the soil so that it will not sink afterwards.

Apply a general fertiliser at 100 g per square metre, rake in and wait a week. Then give a final rake over and sow new lawn seed.
