Running Weeds

darren clinton asked 15 years ago

Gerry,Hello again. I have a number of questions so will send separately. My uncle currently wishes to rotate/turnover his back soil patch now the rubob is nearing the end of its growing season. He has a problem with running climbing weed. Basically an ivy type weed that grow on to anything it attaches itself to, with rampent roots that grow under the soil, spurting up fellow shoots. How and what is the best way to tackle this weed, ie, killing it/.It being impossible to take up every trace of the running root. is there sprays?

Sounds like bindweed which can be controlled by covering the soil with black polythene until it dies, or by spraying with Roundup when it appears in late spring. Do not get Roundup on anything else.
