Rust on our hollyhocks

Margaret Tynan asked 13 years ago

We have been growing Hollyhocks for a number of years and they are a sight to behold , however, every year they get this horrible rust on the leaves – starting lower down and moving up, we usually remove the bad leaves, but can you tell us what we should do to get rid of this problem?

Hollyhocks everywhere get this disease and there is not much can be done apart from remove the worst affected leaves, which will shrivel anyway.

Try feeding in spring with a shake of potash fertiliser, about 30g per square metre, or feed with tomato food from spring to harden the growth.
