can i put salt around shrubs so snails wont attact them and if so when it rains will the salt kill the roots of the shrubs

Salt applied directly to a slug will kill it in gruesome fashion, but it is a waste of time to apply to soil around plants as it will wash away and could damage plant roots in a heavy concentration.
Slugs generally do not attack shrubs in any case, with a few exceptions, notably magnolia.
