Seeds which act as fertilzer

Margaret Hopkins asked 15 years ago
I was watching Gardeners World a few weeks ago and was interested in the section where, once the vegtables have been havested, I could plant some seeds which would prevent weeds growing and then could be used as fertiliser later. A friend of mine has suggested mustard seed but I think the presenter mentioned other seeds, rye being one of them. Do you know what I could use?

This is called green manuring. Plants used for green manures include: mustard, rapeseed, Italian ryegrass, crimson clover, vetch and phacelia.

These are sown in late summer, early autumn, and dug down in late winter/early spring.

Green manuring is beneficial but there is work involved in digging it in.
