sick apple tree

Elizabeth Donnelly asked 13 years ago

This young apple tree’s trunk looks pretty sick, but it still has green leaves – is it apple canker? There are other apple, cherry and plum trees nearby – should i remove the tree, roots and all? and will i be able to plant another fruit tree in that location. Thanks for your advice.

Yes, that is apple canker and it may, or may not, girdle the stem. If it does, the top of the tree will die, but it might sprout below the canker.

Take out any loose bits around the wound. Control grass within a two-metre diameter. Feed in spring with sulphate of potash at 50g per square metre to harden the wood.

There is no threat to other kinds of fruit tree.
