Starting aquaponics

Geri Ray asked 12 years ago

I have an established fish pond in my garden. I recently found out about aquaponics and I was wondering if I would be able to set up this system with my pond or would I have to set up a complete system in order to start growing vegetables in this way?

Aquaponics is a system of growing vegetables in conjunction with farkming fish in ponds.

The theory is to use the waste produced by the fish to feed the plants … the fish excteing nitrogen and the plants using it.

This principle is used in parts of Asia.

It is a very complex technique, a difficult balancing act of plant and fish nutrition, as it needs a way for the plants to float, biofilters for nitrate production and the right population of fish. And there are issues of health and water contamination.
