stripped bark on beech hedging

hi there gerry,we planted some green beech hedging in winter, as a boundary hedge. something is stripping the bark, or scratching the bark of the new plants, could this be hares, as they can be seen running thru the garden, in the morning,the site is very rural.Any ideas ?cheers john.

Yes, hares can do that and you may need to put in some fencing, if the damage is severe.
