We have a 6 young whippy laburnums which I would hope will cover a walkway. How would I train them into an archway?

Simply tie the longest whippy growths to the archway, and shorten all other to fingerlength. In the next few years tie in the extension growth of these whippy shoots and shroten everything else to fingerlength in late summer.
This pruning is done to encourage the formation of flower spurs on the framework shoots. Do not try to tie in all branches as this results in a tangle … retain only the whippy shoots need to make a framework.
