trying to build a coastal garden

ollie walsh asked 13 years ago
I have a large coastal garden, quite exposed that I am trying to build up. Hedging is in and doing well but I am looking for help with getting some colour into the garden. Advice on trees and shrubs would be appreciated also. I am a beginner gardiner and dont know where to start.

Get the hedging established before planting many other trees and shrubs,

Some shrubs are very wind and salt resistant, such as Senecio greyi, Hebe franciscana and others, hypericum, Rosa rugosa, hydrangea, fuchsia and tamarisk. There are more choices at: https://gardenie.wpengine.com/plant-finder

Do not plant any yellow-leaved, purple-leaved or variegated kinds as they do not withstand sea wind well.
