I was thinking of planting a Fagus sylvatica dawyck either side of steps leading from the patio onto the lawn-i wonder how it responds to pruning i dont want it to get too wide or too tall. can it be kept to about 4foot diameter by pruning.? if the top is pruned will it bush out as a result?

Dawyck beech tends to broaden with age but, like any beech, it can be clipped to shape but this might become more difficult as it gets taller. Clipping the top will tend to lead to broadening but in effect it would be a topiarized tree at that stage anyway.
