variagated poplar tree

Tom Kenny asked 14 years ago

My 20 yr old variagated poplar tree has grown wildly in the past year with numerous new shoots growing vertically on each branch. This has given the tree a very unkempt appearance and it produced very poor foliage last summer. Apart from the top of the tree being cut by ESB some years ago it has never been pruned. What’s best for this tree?

The variegated poplar tends to get messy looking as it gets older. You can cut it back hard and it will re-sprout with larger, better leaves. and can be cut down ever few years to keep it smaller and vigorous.
