Vegetables can be grown in containers but do far better in the open soil. Even if you have not got much small in the open ground, or you are using ths available space for flowers and shrubs, you might be able to find a few spots between flowers in which to grow vegetables or some herbs.

A space of about a square metre or even less can be enough to grow some herbs, french beans, carrots, lettuce, radish, rocket, spinach greens, chinese vegetables and the like, You would avoid the bigger crops such as potatoes, cabbage and sprouts as these take too much room and spend too much time in the soil.

Choose spaces that are sunny with good deep soil.
