I have an area in my lawn which i am cutting off so as to cut down on the area which has to be mowed. I am planting trees through out it but dont know what to cover the area underneath with. I want to keep it natural, without having to mow it.

Plant garden woodland to reduce the mowing. Kill the existing sod with Roundup and plant into the dead sod, using small whips of 60-90cm, spaced 1.5 to 2m apart at random.

Control weeds in the first five years with Roundup or Basta as willowherb, which is resistant to Roundup, begins to become dominant. Keep the weedkillers off the young trees.

Eventually ferns and ivy will cover the woodland floor and you can speed this up by planting same, and perhaps bluebells, wild garlic, and primroses.
