I have a couple of spruce including a blue spruce i only bought last year, also a holly only maybe two year old potted in decent pots. this year as we came in to spring we started loosing all the pines, the same on the holly. This has continued and the holly is almost leafless. I tried re-potting with a larger pot and good compost but to no avail. all the pine seem to go red before dropping.

There are several reasons why spruce and holly in pots might lose leaves, but the most common one is drought… failure to water. Many plants ran short of water this spring.

Plants in pots must be kept just nicely moist year round.

If it was not watering, the spruce may have succumbed to greenflies or red spider mites, and the holly to holly leaf spot.

In any case, it is very unlikely that they will recover to any quality. The older shoots will remain bare, if the needles are lost.
