When is right time to prune gooseberries and is it the old or new branches I should prune. Got it wrong last year resulting in a small ammount of fruit on some old wood.

Gooseberries fruit from fruiting spurs on old wood. So a framework of older branches is created and the new growth taken off or shortened back to make spurs for future years. Some old spurs are removed on an established bush each year.

Gooseberries are pruned in summer, removing unwanted new shoots and shortening some.

In winter, further pruning removes some of those shortened shoots and any waek shoots that have grown since summer.
