When to move plants

Hilary Wakeman asked 16 years ago

I have lots of plants in the wrong places. Is there a rule of thumb about when shrubs and perennials and small trees can be moved? Is there a best-time-of-year, or is when they begin to die down – or is there no overall rule?

Most plants can be moved between October and March.  This is generally done as the plants go into dormancy or are already dormant. Best done in autumn generally.

Do not move plants during wet weather or frosty weather, and if it is an exposed site, it is best to wait until spring.
