yellow bay leaves

Could you tell me what would cause the leaves on a bay laurel to yellow and fall off? the tree is about 10 years old and this is a new thing this year. also not all the leaves are affected.

In a pot, it can become restricted and hungry with leaf yellowing and loss.

In the open soil, this could be a bad attack of scale insect, especially if some leaves are blackened with sooty mould, or it might be honey fungus disease at the roots.
