In effect are lawn sand and sulphate of iron are the same thing? Both kill moss on lawns but is there one better than the other?
We sowed a new lawn 2 weeks ago today and it slow enough to sprout. it had very dry spells but we watered it all throughout. Im just wondering how long is the usual germination time?
Last year I put down grass seed, it grew fine in the sunny section of the garden, but in the shaded section of the garden it grew poorly. I was just wondering whether the grass will grow in the shaded area or am I wasting my time laying grass seed again?
Our grass was full of moss so we aerated and scarified our lawn. Our local garden centre advised us to put down horticultural sand and plant grass seed. We have done this and kept the lawn well watered but it is now two weeks on and there is no sign of new grass. Has the grass died in the warm weather? What do we do next? (The grass husks look empty or at the very least there is no sign of germination)
The area immediately in front of my house has become overgrown with rushes. They are up to waist height at the moment. I have tried some weed killers and have cut the rushes previously, but to no effect. Any advise? I have hedging and other plants nearby so need to be careful if using chemicals. John.
Small problem of thistles all over the garden to the point you cannot walk on it. how do i most cost effectively get rid of them?first time gardener with a lawn only seeded two years ago, nothing else on the lawn.
i had to dig up my lawn.how long will it take to grow back? and what type of seed could i use?
I have a small weed which is spreading rapidly through my grass lawn and is effectively taking over. Grass is not able to survive so now I just have ad odd blade of grass growing through it. It has a white/pinkish thin stem with small round green leaves. I have heard it called the "Glasnevin" weed, probably because it is growing in many gardens in the area. One representative in a Garden Centre obviously knew of the weeds existence and said it could be effectively treated by Winter Tar Oil or Winter Tar Wash BUT this product was NO longer available.
I would like to convert our existing large lawn area into a wild flower meadow. It already has a number of species-mostly dandelions at the moment, plantain and other! The Irish Times had an offer of grass seed with native Irish wild flowers in it. Would this be a good idea or should one just wait for the grass to be colonised by airborne seeds?
is it safe to have children and pets on lawn after sulphate of iron distribution, does dead moss need to be raked out.
My lawn is sort of yellow in patches could you tell me what its from? how could i stop it from spreading?
I carried out repairs on my lawn last October, probably left it too late in the year. I burned off the grass, rotovated it and sown new lawn seed, It was a very cold winter and the lwn not is very patchy in places and some weeds have developed. Can you advise me what steps to take to get the lawn into good order. its 32 feet by 32 feet.
How do I apply sulphate of iron in solid form? I tried today in my speader but it wouldn't go through it. I think it was too damp. It just stuck to the bottom. I had to continuously bounce spreader to release it. I fear it wasn't spread very evenly. Also how long do I have to wait before applying fertiliser?
