I have (maybe had!?) a 40 year old clematis which did very well for years. It was growing up a wall and wandering through the neighbours hedge at the top. This helped to support it and it gave spectacular flowers. Last Oct/Nov we cut it back as we were doing some work on the nearby wall. I can't see any leaves on it at all, there were some small little sproutings on the old wood and all of them seem to have withered. Do I have to give up on it? Or is there something else I can try

I have a branch of a hawthorn tree covered in ivy which needs to be cut back as it is leaning over my house. I have kept an eye on it and can't see any activity of birds nesting in it but this does not rule out that they are not. When would it be safe to cut back the branch?

My 20 yr old variagated poplar tree has grown wildly in the past year with numerous new shoots growing vertically on each branch. This has given the tree a very unkempt appearance and it produced very poor foliage last summer. Apart from the top of the tree being cut by ESB some years ago it has never been pruned. What's best for this tree?
when is the best time to cut back oak trees and beech trees without stopping their growth
I read some advice on this site you gave about an old Clematis, but I have an old one (around 14 years old) that flowers in June which has become very wild. It's lost all it's leaves for winter, but is starting to bud and I want to cut it right back. The problem is it's extremely woody (looks like it's splintered) at the base, so where should I cut? Should I find the closest spot between newer and woodier growth, or should I remove it all and start again?
